In 2020 we were in the midst of planning a community forum and workshop on end of life and addressing intergenerational grief and trauma. We had providers from Providence hospital eager to join us and share their expertise along with counselors and local resource options. The pandemic came and turned things upside down, providers left and we are hoping we can revisit that concept in the future. In the meantime our attention shifted toward supporting providers of hospice care here in Juneau and outlying communities with emergency grants.
“Every person should have the option to choose how they live out their last days,” said Board President Bruce Weyhrauch. “Our goal is to ensure fully funded hospice care is always available in Juneau and, when possible, support hospice organizations in other Southeast Alaska communities.”
Grants totaling $49,506 went to the following communities:
Juneau: $40,606
Gustavus: $4,000
Sitka: $4,000
Haines: $900
Funds were also put toward gifting our book, “A Guide for Helping Those You Love When You’re Not There” to hospice providers throughout the state.
